Do You Need Your LGV C1?

Do You Need To Drive an Ambulance?

LGV C1 Training

1. How many hours training per day are you actually getting?

Watch out for “it’s a 5 day course”! Which could turn out to just be 3 hours training per day, often not enough to get you to the test standard. We make it clear to you exactly what days and how many hours per day you will be getting. We always charge by the hour, so we can tailor the 1:1 course specifically to you.

2. Training school or Middleman “Broker”?

HGV Training Brokers are middlemen, who will take your money and then book you with an actual training school making a profit by booking you reduced hours or charging an inflated price. In the last 3 years alone, there have been 2 high profile cases of 2 large brokers liquidating, “HGV Training Group” and “Specialised Training”. There are countless cases of this happening over the years and it can happen at any time, as they own no vehicles, they can just pack up their sales office and disappear, taking thousands of your hard earned cash with them. Always protect yourself by booking directly with a local training school.

It can be difficult to know if you’re booking with a training school, or training broker. The best ways to tell the difference are:

• Watch out for companies that claim to cover the whole of the UK. Some claim to have 50, 60 or even 100 training centres. There is no such thing as a HGV training school with branches in that many locations.
• They will refuse to allow site visits or make excuses. A real training school like ourselves will welcome you popping in for a chat and have a look at the vehicles. A Broker doesn’t have vehicles, so will make excuses not to allow this.
• You will be pressure sold on the phone and constantly phoned back, as they will work on commission. Our training advisors are there to provide friendly accurate licencing and course information, not be pushy and pressure you to give card details over the phone.

3. How long will you be waiting for the practical training element of your package?

Due to a DVSA test shortage, combined with the Government’s HGV Bootcamp Scheme, many schools are looking at a 5/6 month wait time for courses. We decided not to get involved in the (now closed for entry to drivers) Bootcamp scheme as it had very strict eligibility and we wanted to be fair to both the majority of the general population who weren’t eligible and our loyal business customers, by keeping an average just 1-2 month wait time. We can also pre-book suitable course dates for you, early in your package process with us, to ensure you get the dates that work with your schedule and time-frames best.

About the LGV Tests

The theory multiply choice theory test is currently £26.

You must pass both parts, 1a multiply choice, and part 1b hazard perception, to pass the theory part of the test.

You have 1 hour and 55 minutes to answer 100 multiple-choice questions.

Before the test starts you’ll get:

instructions on how the test works the chance to do some practice questions to get used to the screens.

A question and several possible answers appear on a screen. You have to select the right answer.

The pass mark for this part is 85 out of 100 questions.

Leaving a question, You can ‘flag’ questions that you want to come back to later.

Changing your answers, You can go back to any question to review and change your answer at any point.

When you’ve finished, You can finish the multiple-choice questions part when you’ve answered all of the questions.

You do not have to use the full 1 hour and 55 minutes.

This test is currently £11.

Before you start the hazard perception test, you’ll be shown a video about how it works.

You’ll then watch 19 video clips.

The clips: feature everyday road scenes, contain at least one ‘developing hazard’ - but one of the clips features 2 developing hazards.
You get points for spotting the developing hazards as soon as they start to happen.

What a ‘developing hazard’
A developing hazard is something that would cause you to take action, like changing speed or direction.

Example
A car is parked at the side of the road and is not doing anything. It would not cause you to take action, so it’s not a developing hazard.

When you get closer, the car’s right-hand indicator starts to flash and it starts to move away. You’d need to slow down, so it’s now a developing hazard.

How the scoring works
You can score up to 5 points for each developing hazard.

To get a high score, click the mouse as soon as you see the hazard starting to develop.

You do not lose points if you click and get it wrong. However, you will not score anything if you click continuously or in a pattern.

You only get one attempt at each clip. You cannot review or change your responses.

The pass mark for this part is 67 out of 100.

Your test result
You’ll be given a letter at the test centre with the results for the part of the theory test you’ve just taken.

When you’ve passed both parts, your theory test certificate will be posted to you. You need this when you book your Driver CPC part 3 driving test.

IMPORTANT. Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years from when you passed the first part of the test.

You need to pass the Driver CPC part 3 driving test within 2 years, otherwise you’ll have to pass the part 1 theory test again.

If you fail the theory tests
You’ll get a results letter with feedback telling you why you’ve failed.

You can book another theory test straight away, but you cannot take it for another 3 clear working days.

This test is currently £23.

(IMPORTANT. You will not need to take and pass the driver CPC case studies and practical demonstration tests If driving is not the main part of your job or the vehicle is exempt.

For example if you: want to carry passengers or goods for personal use and not commercially
only drive for certain tasks, like taking the vehicle to test centres
drive as part of your job, but it is not the main part of your job
You also do not need the full Driver CPC if the vehicle you’re driving is either:

limited to 28mph
being used by services like the armed forces or the police).

You can book the part 2 case studies test of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) as soon as you’ve got your provisional licence. You do not need to have passed the Driver CPC part 1 theory test.

If you’re requalifying as a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) or bus driver by taking parts 2 and 4 of the test, you cannot book your test online. You have to book by phone instead.

How the test works

The test is made up of 7 case studies you work through on a computer. The case studies are short stories based on situations that you’re likely to come across in your working life.

You’ll be asked between 6 and 8 multiple-choice questions on each case study.

The test lasts for 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the pass mark is 40 out of 50.

Your test result
You’ll get a letter with the results at the test centre.

You need the test pass reference number when you book your Driver CPC part 4 practical demonstration test.

IMPORTANT. The pass letter is valid for 2 years.

You need to pass the Driver CPC part 4 practical demonstration test within 2 years, otherwise you’ll have to pass the part 2 case studies test again.

If you fail the test
You’ll get a result letter with feedback telling you why you’ve failed.

You can book another case studies test straight away, but you cannot take it for another 3 clear working days.(

Test result
